The Employee Engagement Crisis. Can L&D Provide Solutions?



Bersin Deloitte 2015 Human Capital Trends Report has identified employee engagement and culture as the #1 issue worldwide. Australia was identified as having engagement and culture gap (-31) greater than US (-30), India (-28), UK (-25) and China (-22).

Interestingly the same report identified Learning as a business-critical priority for increasing skills, improving the leadership pipeline, and enhancing employee engagement and retention.

In the world of increasing retrenchments and outsourcing the message sent to employees is “fend for yourself”. Employees have less motivation to contribute to the success of the organisation beyond what is mandatory or what is incentivised.

L&D are in the fortunate position of providing a service that employees care about i.e. their own development. However, the focus for L&D in Australia seems to be on:

  • Compliance, product and process training which does not contribute to employee development.
  • Leadership development which is limited to senior managers.

Designing Learning that is seen as development opportunities by employees provides L&D to contribute one the pressing HR issues.
